Addiction is one of the nation’s major health problems, as evidenced by the high rates of smoking and drinking as well as the widespread use of legal and illegal drugs. Tonight, Drs. Alan Marlatt (UW) and Judson Brewer (Yale University) will discuss treatment and relapse prevention techniques.
Judson Brewer - Mindfulness Training as Treatment and Mechanistic Probe for Addiction
Abstract:
The talk will discuss 1) the neurobiology of addiction and how stress plays a role in relapse to drug use, 2) adaptations that we have made to Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention for delivery to individuals with addictions in outpatient and inpatient settings and 3) how mindfulness training is informing our scientific understanding of how this training affects the brain and the addictive process.
G. Alan Marlatt - Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention in the Treatment of Addictive Behaviors
Abstract:
The talk will describe the results of a treatment study designed to prevent relapse in patients in substance abuse treatment. The treatment program combines mindfulness meditation with cognitive-behavioral coping skills (to manage urges and cravings).
